What is HDO plywood?
High Density Overlay (HDO) plywood is manufactured with a thermosetting resin- impregnated fiber surface bonded to both sides under heat and pressure. It’s the more rugged of the overlaid panels and ideal for such punishing applications as concrete forming and industrial tanks.
What is the difference between HDO and MDO plywood?
Both MDO and HDO are hardwood plywoods with a resin soaked fiber overlays between the veneer layers and on both surfaces. The only differences between the two products are that the density of the exterior fiber layer on the HDO is considerably higher than for MDO and it is manufactured with higher resin content.
Can HDO plywood be painted?
The smooth fiber surface is impregnated with a special resin, which is designed to accept paint. If the panel is properly primed and painted, it should deliver exceptional outdoor durability. In fact, a painted MDO panel should easy outlast painted exterior grade plywood.
What kind of plywood do you use for concrete forms?
Virtually any “Exterior” rated APA panel can be used for concrete formwork because all such panels are manufactured with moisture resistant adhesive. For concrete forming, the plywood industry produces a special product called Plyform®, which is recommended for most general forming uses.
Can you use CDX plywood for concrete forms?
For single-use applications, CDX plywood is probably the cheapest substrate material when the concrete finish doesn’t matter. But be aware that CDX is designed for other purposes, has only 5 plys, and isn’t rated for the pressures that concrete can impose. For repetitive work, better grades of plywood are necessary.
Can you make plywood waterproof?
Liquid Latex Spray – on or paint – on Latex is another effective plywood protector. It’s available at hardware stores and forms a waterproof layer on the surface of the plywood to protect it from moisture. Liquid Latex products are easy to apply and relatively inexpensive.
What is overlaid plywood used for?
Demanding applications such as concrete forming, exterior siding, and industrial containers require tough building materials. APA trademarked High and Medium Density Overlay plywood (HDO and MDO) combine the toughness of Exterior-type plywood with the superior wear of an overlaid surface.
What is MDF plywood?
Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is generally more dense than plywood.
What are the 3 types of plywood?
Although specialty plywood can have any number of plies above three, most plywood is categorized as 3-ply, 5-ply or multi-ply.
- 3-ply is one of the most common types of plywood.
- 5-ply is a versatile type of plywood that is about 4-millimeters thick.
- Multi-ply is a catchall term for plywood with seven or more plies.
Is MDF stronger than plywood?
MDF is ideal for cutting, machining and drilling, since it does not chip easily. On the other hand, plywood is a much more stronger material, which can be used for doors, floors, staircases and outdoor furniture.
What is the best paint for MDO plywood?
Coat the primed MDO with acrylic latex paint.
What is marine grade plywood?
Marine plywood is the highest graded plywood in the plywood industry. The name of these plywood suggests that these are used for the boat construction industry because they are highly resistant to water. Boats require a tremendous resistance to water. Hence, they are made to withstand long exposure to water.
How do you seal MDO plywood?
When using a MDO plywood outdoors that is unprimed, it should be appropriately edge sealed and primed on both sides with a high quality wood primer that is compatible with latex (waterborne) paints. A light sanding is recommended prior to priming, to promote adhesion and reduce any potential evidence of wood grain.
